"Bigger than the shadow"

Mary Baker Eddy, in a letter to her students (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 134), writes, "He who dwelleth in eternal light is bigger than the shadow, and will guard and guide His own." She adds, "In God's hour, the powers of earth and hell are proven powerless."

A student of Christian Science remembers a childhood experience in a small New England village, where sometimes the white clouds seemed to chase each other through the sky and their shadows moved swiftly along the road below. It was this child's delight to try to keep in the shadow as she ran along, but the sunshine was so much bigger than the clouds that she was always finding herself out in the sunlight again.

From time to time in this earthly mortal life, we find shadows of sickness, of disappointment, of discouragement, of temptation, of fear, and even of death, darkening our pathway. Why should we ever fear these shadows or think of them as engulfing us, when we know that light inevitably follows darkness, even as day follows night? Such shadows are but the absence of light, caused by temporary obstructions. As we reach out toward the light and walk in that direction, we find ourselves again in the sunlight of eternal day.
