Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
Georgetown, British Guiana
In an issue of The Daily Chronicle newspaper there was an article entitled "Mrs. Roosevelt sends Message to the Women of British Guiana" in which reference was made to the "Guianese Students of Unity School of Christian Science."
Your Committee promptly called on the manager of the newspaper, taking a letter of correction, and was cordially received. The visit was an opportunity to explain in a brief way some of the work of this Committee, and our reason for wanting the correction made. Although willing to comply with the request, the manager thought the matter would lead to a controversy, so advised waiting to see if it would appear again. A few days later in the same paper the Unity School was mentioned but the words "Christian Science" were omitted.
The news broadcasts of The Christian Science Monitor have been much appreciated by the public, and on one occasion a letter was written by one of the editors of our newspapers expressing his appreciation.
A special message was sent to our society from The Christian Science Board of Directors in Boston through our Manager of Committees on Publication there, giving the procedure that The Mother Church would adopt when a Special Day of Prayer was decreed by the President of the United States or the Governor of Massachusetts and saying that branch churches and societies were free to follow the same method under similar circumstances in their localities.
At the request of His Majesty the King for a Special Day of Prayer to be observed, shortly after this notice was received, our society held a service following the procedure given, and also reading the last verse from our Leader's poem "The United States to Great Britain" (Poems, p. 10).
Kentucky During the past year, your Committee has had the experience and pleasure of looking after the interests of Christian Science and Christian Scientists during the legislative period in Frankfort. This was a very inspiring activity because so many times bills were introduced in the Senate or the House which seemed unjust to Christian Scientists. In these cases proper metaphysical work was done, certain human footsteps were taken, and in every case the bills either died in committee or were defeated when put to a final vote.
Because of the troubled conditions caused by the world-wide conflict and lack of advertising income many newspapers throughout the state have greatly reduced the size of their publications and a large number of them have discontinued publication altogether; but in spite of this fact, the linage of Christian Science material used during the year has far exceeded past years, owing principally to the greater recognition of The Christian Science Monitor as an authentic source of world news, which has impelled many editors to reprint, with due credit, entire editorials from our paper. The Annual Meeting of The Mother Church publicity this year was three times the linage of last year, principally because of the sensitiveness of the public press to events and activities pertaining to spiritual values. In other words, a greater sense of spiritual consciousness has been noted in the outlook of all the newspapers.
It is most gratifying to receive letters from editors throughout the state with such remarks as. "I greatly enjoy your fine newspaper and would not be without it;" "I wish to congratulate you on the high standard the Monitor has established for all newspapers;" "The Monitor is invaluable in its sane and authentic analysis of world news at this time."
Much progress has been manifested in radio activities during the past year and particularly in the fruitage derived from the devotional programs.
Our Christian Science programs are doing a magnificent job in counteracting the erroneous statements often heard, particularly in relation to the fearful and disturbing broadcasts on world events. Your Committee has on several occasions received notes and remarks from friends listening to these programs, telling how much they appreciate the truths given out by the Christian Science radio programs.
Several outstanding experiences of healing have taken place this year. An individual who heard one of our programs for the first time wrote a letter to the station asking for free literature, and later made a call upon the radiocaster, asking for treatment and receiving a beautiful healing of a discordant physical difficulty. Another case of fruitage was that of a patient in a tuberculosis sanatorium who heard a Christian Science program and, not knowing there was a Reading Room in the vicinity, sent to Boston for a complete set of books. After reading some of them she called for help from a local Christian Science practitioner and has since enjoyed several healings and splendid progress in every way.
During the past year three ministers in the state made open attacks on Christian Science from the pulpit. These gentlemen were called on with good results, and one in particular, after discussing at length the healing power of Christian Science with your Committee, showed a keen interest in Christian Science and asked for a copy of the textbook. This was supplied, which occasioned another visit to this minister, at which time he asked to talk to a Christian Science practitioner regarding a problem his wife was having. This audience with a practitioner was given with splendid results, and a most friendly contact was cemented on this occasion.
