A Soldier of Christ

Stern duty bids me walk an unknown trail,
A path where darksome shadows seem to be;
Yet well I know I shall not faint nor fail,
For Love divine goes all the way with me.
And though I thread out stretches of the sky.
Where winged creatures never yet have flown,
No fearsome thought will come as I mount high.
For Love's voice whispers, "You are not alone."
And if I cannot always trace the way
Across the deep, or in far desert land,
Yet God will guide my footsteps night and day—
Wherever I may go He holds my hand.
And I will give to groundless hate the lie.
A futile weapon, always sure to fall;
God's messages of love are ever nigh,
With tenderness and care enfolding all.
What matters it how rough the path may be?
My lifted banner shall not trail the sod;
The light of Science straight ahead I see.
And joyously I leave it all with God.
