I began the study of Christian Science...
I began the study of Christian Science early in 1922, after being shifted from one physician to another with little or no relief from a number of ailments. Finally after the passing of my dear mother with cancer, I developed a condition which I feared to be cancerous. I was advised to consult a surgeon, which I did. After a thorough physical examination he pronounced the growth to be a tumor, and stated that I was in need of what he termed a major operation; that I could not live without it and would never be well even with it but that it would doubtless prolong my life for a few years. This was early in January, 1922.
At that time I was living in a home of Scientists, and when I came in that evening they noticed I seemed ill. On my telling them the circumstances they assured me that I did not need such an operation, and asked me to try Christian Science. Because of financial reasons I felt I could not arrange for an operation before June, and I told them so. I also told them that I would try Christian Science until June, and if I was not well then I would have the operation. One of the dear friends lent me her copy of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and I began to read. I soon became deeply engrossed in the first chapter, on Prayer, and whenever I had an hour from my office work I went joyfully to read this book. Within a few weeks the growth was entirely gone. It had suddenly disappeared, and I did not know when it had done so—in fact, I had completely forgotten it. During the years that have followed, this has been a great source of encouragement to me when I have seemed to be passing through difficult experiences.
During the next few months a need arose to take out life insurance. I had to undergo a rigid examination. The policy was granted, and I am deeply grateful for this experience. For months it seemed as though all my needs were met through my study of and reliance on that one chapter, entitled "Prayer."
