I desire to testify to God's protecting care. I was on a convoy loaded with goods for Russia. We were attacked by bombers, torpedo planes, and U-boats, all at the same time. This attack continued for several days. Ships were blown up and sunk all around our vessel. I was on the last one to be torpedoed. After my ship was destroyed I got on a life raft. For a time it looked as though we might be drawn into the blades of the propeller of our own ship, and at first I was filled with fear. Then the truth embodied in "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 468) filled my consciousness, and I felt the protecting power of God. I realized something of what our beloved Leader has written: "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is all-in-all." Almost immediately a large breaker from the stern sent our raft spinning from the ship and soon we were about forty yards away. Then an enemy plane flew over us and machined-gunned our raft. This was done twice before we were picked up by a mine sweeper. All this time I was conscious of God's protection.

Later I experienced a second proof of God's protecting care. A shell from my gun exploded and the flesh was torn from two fingers and a thumb. The doctor thought they should be amputated, but I felt sure that Christian Science could heal this condition. I experienced a beautiful healing. I now have good use of my hand, and have been ordered back to active duty.

I was brought up in the Christian Science Sunday School. At times I became indifferent to the teachings of Christian Science and strayed away, but when put to the crucial test, on a life raft in the ocean, I turned unreservedly to God and was saved and healed. After such an experience one could not question God's care of those who absolutely rely upon Him. I am grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School and most grateful for a mother sincerely interested in Christian Science.
