"Let your light so shine"

WHEN heavy mists press on the earth
And hide the stars from sight;
And damp, cold winds so fiercely shriek
Through long-spent hours of night;
And a tiny gleam from heaven's dome
Shines through the parting shroud,
How quickly we do lift our eyes
And gaze straight through the cloud
To that clear star, whose steadfast light
Has shone throughout the storm—
Nor wind nor mist nor tempest-touched—
But shining through the night!

Oh! may we let our light so shine,
Undulled by storm or darkest night,
So that the earth-worn weary ones
May catch its promise bright!
