Assurance

To Hagar, for her young son's life despairing.
There came this angel message, calm and clear:
What ails you? Can you not accept Love's caring?
Lift up the lad above your doubt and fear!
Then looking round, with faith-enlightened vision,
She saw a well of water, just at hand,
And learned with joy, God's infinite provision
Sustains His child in every time and land.

O troubled heart, whose loved one now is faring
To distant lands, to fight for truth and right,
You, too, can trust him to his Father's caring.
"Lift up the lad" from fear and doubt to light!
Lift up your thought of him, seek not to bind him,
But set him safely in Love's secret place;
There harm and hate and danger cannot find him,
God's loving guidance all his steps shall trace.

Then give him wholly to his Father's keeping,
And let God's plan for him be manifest.
Beloved, protected, whether waking, sleeping,
God's presence shall be with him, giving rest.
