The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Palmerston North, New Zealand (First Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Mrs. Gertrude Lee Mummery, who said:—

Mankind is earnestly seeking for peace of mind and body, adequate supply, national unity, and it is the mission of this lecture to reveal something of the Science of right thinking which has come to establish peace.

Shortly after taking up the study of Christian Science I had an outstanding proof of its healing efficacy. Suffering from a severe abscess, when peace of mind and body seemed to be lacking, I sought the aid of a Christian Science practitioner. As she talked to me of the nature of God, ever-present good, and of man as His reflection, subject only to good, my thinking changed. Fear and pain left me, and I became conscious of the man that God created. The healing had taken place, and by the next day all trace of that condition had left me.

Men, women, and children all over the world are proving that right thinking brings harmonious results. Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 150): "Today the healing power of Truth is widely demonstrated as animmanent, eternal Science, instead of a phenomenal exhibition. Its appearing is the coming anew of the gospel of 'on earth peace, good-will toward men.'"

Detroit, Michigan
(Seventh Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Louise Knight Wheatley Cook; introduced by Mrs. Maud Rae Hammond, who said:—

It is recorded in the fourteenth chapter of John that when our Master was talking with his disciples, Philip saith unto him, "Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? ... Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake."

All the war, discord, strife, lack, sin, sickness, and death in the world today is due to the belief that man has an existence apart from God. Christian Scientists have learned that this is not true, that man is the expression of God's being and cannot be separated from God for a single instant. In my own experience, I have found, like many others, that if one is grateful enough and loves enough, he can never lack physically, spiritually, or financially, thus proving or demonstrating his oneness with the Father.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
(Second Church).

Lecturer: Oscar Graham Peeke; introduced by Frank E. Burgess, who said:—

It seems reasonable to assume that the question, Does Christian Science heal? may be uppermost in the minds of those who know little or nothing about this Science.

In reply to this question, may I say a few words about my own experience? More than thirty years ago I was healed of asthma and hay fever, from which I had suffered from the age of eight years. In my case, both these diseases were considered to be hereditary, and were admitted by medical opinion as probably incurable. After three weeks' study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was completely and permanently healed.

At this time my wife had been a semi-invalid for more than a year. Medicine had been of no help and her condition had grown steadily worse. An operation was considered to be too dangerous. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner and the prayerful study of the Bible and Science and Health she was completely and permanently healed in less than a month.

I have been healed of the use of intoxicating liquor and tobacco. Christian Science has helped me morally, in that it has caused me to seek and to enjoy the association of clean-minded Christian people.

Norwood, Massachusetts
(First Church).

Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by George I. Dana, who said:—

Probably all of us have wondered what the kingdom of heaven is and where one might find it. In the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy defines the kingdom of heaven as follows (p. 590): "The reign of harmony in divine Science; the realm of unerring, eternal, and omnipotent Mind; the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme."

Not many years ago, I was in need of both physical and mental healing, and by reading our textbook was healed of arthritis, and thereby restored to a normal, active life. Through this healing, I realized, in some measure, the meaning of "the reign of harmony."

This Christian Science lecture, with its healing message, will bring to us all a clearer, better, and fuller apprehension of "the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme."
