Among the Churches

Current Notes

Winslow, Washington (Society).—The new church of Christian Science Society, Winslow, was dedicated at two services on Sunday, December 28, 1941.

The usual order of service was held, the only variation being the reading of a short history of the society by the First Reader. The text of the history follows:

"This organization had its beginning in the spring of 1932, when informal meetings were held in the homes of a group of students of Christian Science in the Eagle Harbor District. The Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly were read on Sundays, and Sunday school classes formed for the children.

"Articles of incorporation were signed by charter members on May 25, 1932, and by-laws drafted and adopted. Application was granted for recognition as a branch of The Mother Church, and a card maintained in The Christian Science Journal. Sunday services and midweek testimony meetings have been held in the Winslow Library building continuously since May 22, 1932.

"The members began at once to look for a suitable tract of land to acquire for a permanent church home. The present site was soon selected, and purchase begun in July, 1932. Title was received upon the final payment in May, 1936, and the building fund was opened.

"Work was begun on the church building in June, 1941, and the first service was held in the completed structure on Sunday, November 16.

"A Christian Science church is never dedicated until it is free from debt. The officers of this society have certified that the church property is entirely paid for, and that there are no outstanding obligations except current expenses, to meet which there are funds on hand."—Bainbridge Review.

Plainview, Texas (Society).—Twenty-five years ago a small group of students of Christian Science met in homes here to read the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly. On Sunday, December 14, 1941, Christian Science Society, Plainview, dedicated its new church building at the corner of Austin and Ninth Streets.

In 1937, the society was organized in Plainview, and on February 28, 1938, it was officially recognized as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Property was bought at 710 E1 Paso, where regular services were held for three years. In February, 1941, the building was moved to the present location and remodeled. On April 27 the first service was held in the new building. The society has maintained a Reading Room and has given three lectures since it was organized.

All church buildings must be free from debt before they can be dedicated, according to the rules of The Mother Church.—Plainview Evening Herald.

Dodge City, Kansas (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Dodge City, was dedicated on Sunday morning, December 28, 1941. Dedication of the church had been deferred until it was debt-free.

Christian Science Society, Dodge City, was organized in 1910, and became a church in 1930. A gift from the estate of the late Selina C. Cornish of New York City made it possible to start work on the church building in the summer of 1940. The cornerstone was laid on November 9, and the first service was held there on November 27, 1940.

A sketch of the history of the church in Dodge City was read at the dedication service.
