God Knows Not Evil

[Original article in German]

In the first chapter of Habakkuk the prophet writes of God, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil." In consonance with this passage our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 243), "Truth has no consciousness of error." This must mean that God has no knowledge of evil.

When light is directed towards an object, a shadow forms behind it. Yet we may say that the light never sees the shadow, for as soon as the object is removed, the shadow is there no more. The light has no knowledge of darkness; for in the light, darkness does not exist.

To those dwelling in the light of Spirit, the shadows of sickness or error are unknown. Those who are clinging to a false state of consciousness cannot perceive this divine light until the darkened condition yields somewhat to Truth. As soon as the false belief is given up, however, evil is destroyed and cannot be seen. This process of error's destruction becomes more understandable when we learn to regard God scientifically as Principle and discard the false concept of Him as a finite person, endowed with human qualities. Thus it daily becomes clearer to us that to God, good, there is no darkness, no evil.
