Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on April 27, 1941.]

"As the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will" (John 5:21; compare I Tim. 6:13) — In these passages the verb "quicken" is, of course, used in its semiarchaic sense of "to make alive," and, when thus understood, it provides a literal rendering of the Greek.

"Why do thoughts arise in your hearts?" (Luke 24:38) — Moffatt suggests the rendering, "Why do doubts invade your mind?" The Twentieth Century New Testament has: "Why do doubts arise in your minds?"

"The law of Moses, . . . the prophets, and . . . the psalms" (Luke 24:44) — The Jews regarded the Old Testament as consisting of three main divisions, and scholars feel that in this verse Christ Jesus had these divisions in mind. The first section was the Pentateuch or "law of Moses"; the second, the prophetic books; and the third, "the Writings," of which the book of Psalms was one of the most outstanding representatives.
