The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Mankato, Minnesota (First Church).
Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. Alice Perrin Baker, who said: —
In the seeming chaos of the material world today men and women are coming to a clearer realization than ever before that the spiritual truth taught in the Bible is the one sure foundation upon which to lean. Because of their great need a desire has been born, the desire to know more of God; and because of this need and this desire they have found God to be an actuality, in fact, the only reality.
Christian Scientists have been finding for many years a sure foundation, the actuality of the ever-presence of God. In many of their churches you will find displayed the quotation from the New Testament, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free;" and also, perhaps, the quotation form the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." Christian Scientists have proved to their own satisfaction that these statements are demonstrably true; they have found the truth that does make free; they have found that their need is to understand more of God and of man in His image and likeness, and that divine Love, in supplying this understanding, has met and is meeting their every need. Christian Scientists can tell you, if you talk with them or if you come to their Wednesday evening meetings, of instances of sickness destroyed, of sight and hearing restored, of sorrow turned into joy, of poverty and limitation of every kind turned into an abundance of good and right activity, of weakness replaced by strength, and of hatred and fear replaced by love and peace. These and many other healings have been accomplished by their study of the Bible and its interpretation in Science and Health.
Las Vegas, Nevada (First Church).
Lecturer: Miss Florence Middaugh; introduced by Mrs. Gladys C. Girard, who said:
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, gives us these beautiful lines in her poem, "Mother's Evening Prayer" (Poems, p. 4):
"O gentle presence, peace and joy and power;
O Life divine, that owns each waiting hour,
Thou Love that guards the nestling's faltering flight!
Keep Thou my child on upward wing tonight."
May we, gathered here this evening, think of this waiting hour just opening to us as owned by God, Life, Truth, and Love, as understood in Christian Science! To those who, with loving, receptive thought, accept the truth, this hour can bring the dawn of abundant hope, courage, peace, joyousness, health.
My health and well-being I owe entirely to Christian Science, for by means of this precious Science I have been lifted into a richer, fuller life experience, and healed of many sicknesses, acute and chronic.
Sheridan, Wyoming (First Church).
Lecturer: Peter V. Ross; introduced by Mrs. Carolyne Steele Graff, who said:—
Men "have sought out many inventions," but conditions in the world today prove conclusively that man's wisdom and planning have not been sufficient to establish security, health, or peace in the world; and in their extremity, men and women everywhere are turning for help to the Word of God. Here we read, in the book of Isaiah, these encouraging words: "Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God . . . will come and save you."
We must all finally be convinced that God is the only power, and that the only important thing in the world today, or in any day, is to know God and to understand the workings of His plans for His children.
A Christian Science lecture makes clear God's plans and reveals how we may so live in Christian Science that even in the midst of danger and turmoil we can still know that all is well.
Nyack, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Mrs. Jessie May Smith, who said:—
We read in the book of Psalms, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions;" and in the Gospel of Luke, "The people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him."
Many years ago the Word came to me, and shone in my consciousness, healing me instantly of a severe condition of the heart, that several physicians had pronounced incurable; it also restored me, after years of invalidism, to joyous activity and usefulness. This healing has remained perma nent and complete; for, like the people of old, I, too, was ready and waiting for the truth, as taught in Christian Science, and gladly received it.
Mary Baker Eddy has written in her world-renowned book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 323, 324): "Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea. Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear,—this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony."
Bangor, Maine (First Church).
Lecturer: Dr. John M. Tutt; introduced by Mrs. Mary Evelyn Craig, who said: —
The lecturer is with us today because we need to learn more about God, "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases."
We are told in the Bible about a centurion who came to Jesus humbly seeking healing for his servant. He asked Jesus to "speak the word only," and his servant would "be healed." Jesus spoke the word, and the servant was healed in that very hour. The healing Word has lost none of its power.
Anyone who willingly seeks to know how Christian Science heals can learn that spiritual healing is reasonable and natural. The listening ear and the humble heart will begin at once to apply the healing words to his own problem, and wisdom will teach him to search the Scriptures and Mrs. Eddy's writings for more light and understanding.
Columbia City, Indiana (First Church).
Lecturer: Richard J. Davis; introduced by Mrs. Dorothy Cline, who said:—
We all know that if we are obedient to the laws of our land we have protection, safety, and security. It is also true that if we are obedient to God's laws we are guided, guarded, and led into paths that bring us peace, joy, and comfort.
Man's birthright is freedom from and dominion over all evil or error. Therefore man can master all his troubles instead of letting his troubles master him. When I first began to attend Christian Science services these words from Hymn 148 of the Christian Science Hymnal stood out to me:
Green pastures are before me,
Which yet I have not seen;
Bright skies will soon be o'er me,
Where darkest clouds have been.
I proved these words to be true after I began to study and apply Christian Science. Clouds of gloominess, sickness, and discord began to disappear, and I have had more happiness, health, and harmony than ever before.
North Platte, Nebraska (First Church).
Lecturer: Peter B. Biggins; introduced by Ray C. Norris, who said:—
Paul, the apostle, writing to the Corinthians, assured them that "eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." There is a yearning in the human heart for those things, for release from fear, sin, discord, disease, and want, and for their opposites—love, joyous assurance, purity, harmony, health, and abundance.
Mary Baker Eddy has assured humanity of the infinite resources of the omnipotent, all-loving creator. She discovered why earnest seekers for Truth were seemingly unable to gain from the Scriptures the spiritual understanding and power which were so evident in the lives of Christ Jesus and the apostles. After years of consecrated and prayerful study and application of the laws of God, the laws of Spirit, she gave to the world "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." An ever-increasing number of men, women, and children throughout the world are finding the practical solution of their problems through the study of this textbook.
Those who are earnestly and honestly seeking good are becoming acquainted with God, infinite good, and are receiving those things "which God hath prepared for them that love him."
