"Ask, and it shall be given you; . . . for every one that asketh receiveth." I remember as a young girl listening to a conversation between my mother and a representative of the church of which we were members. This Bible verse was under discussion, and my mother was bewailing the fact that she had asked for something for several years, and her prayers had not been answered. I do not remember the reply given to her, but I do remember the disappointment and bewilderment expressed by my mother.
About this time I was wishing to know more definitely what God is. I had been a faithful and active church attendant as long as I could remember, and yet I was becoming more and more dissatisfied.
Soon after this a relative, younger than I, was having Christian Science treatment, and the practitioner said he wished this boy could attend the Christian Science Sunday School. This meant a trip of an hour by trolley, and the boy could not be expected to take the trip each Sunday alone, so I said I would accompany him on condition that I should not be asked to study the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I felt from what I had heard of Christian Science that it would appeal to me if I looked into it, but I did not wish to be considered ridiculous through adopting its teachings, for this was the opinion expressed of Christian Scientists by my relatives and friends. However, after being a listener in the Sunday school for a few Sundays, one day I began reading the chapter on Prayer in Science and Health. After reading a moment or two I ceased to care what anybody thought, since I knew this book was answering my questions. I was learning what God is! From that time I became a student of Christian Science, and I cannot possibly express in words my gratitude for the blessings which have been mine because of the measure of understanding I have gained of God as omnipresent Love, the Giver of good and good only, the only power governing and controlling man and the universe. Among the healings which I have experienced through Christian Science treatment are those of grippe, sinus trouble, and headaches.
