Signs of the Times

Topic: Overcoming Discouragement

[Dr. Ulyss S. Mitchell, as quoted in the Berkeley (California) Daily Gazette]

The world in which Jesus lived was overcast with somber shadows too. Poverty, sickness, ignorance, greed, exploitation, slavery, foreign rule, excessive taxes, oppression. Hypocrisy in high places and religious pretenders all contrived to defeat personal and spiritual values.

Did Jesus try to dispel those shadows by despondency and defeatism? Was he bitter? Did hatred fill his heart? Did he say, "Go out and meet the world on its own terms"? An eye for an eye—despite those who differ with you and slay your enemies? No; for he knew by that means he would only make more shadows.
