In deep gratitude for Christian Science, and in the hope...

In deep gratitude for Christian Science, and in the hope that this testimony will be helpful to a larger number of people than those assembled at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, I wish to tell the following experience. It illustrates the wonders that can be wrought by only a slight knowledge of the truth, as revealed to the world by Mary Baker Eddy through Christian Science.

During the 1914-1918 war I was on active service in France. I was not a Christian Scientist, and what little I had heard of this religion I frankly disbelieved. I was not religiously minded, though I believed in a Supreme Being, who in some way, incomprehensible to me, governed the universe. That He was entirely good I could not believe, on account of the evident want and misery in the world.

My mother, at home in England, was in poor health at the time, and very much worried concerning my safety. A friend, who was a Christian Scientist, had written and given to her the first two verses of Mrs. Eddy's hymn, "Mother's Evening Prayer" (Poems, p. 4). Seeing the beauty, and feeling the truth in these wonderful words, she clung to them day and night when thinking of me. My sister was slightly interested in Christian Science and owned a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. One night my sister awoke with a great fear for my safety, and turning on her light, took her textbook and tried to read. Soon the angel thought came to her in the words of the Bible, "Be still, and know that I am God." Her anxiety quieted, and she went to sleep.
