A correspondent suggests that the question of the reality of matter is answered by acceptance of the theory that the material is created by Spirit. Such a statement is illogical, since the natures of Spirit and matter are so utterly opposed that one could not create the other, for "like produces like." Mrs. Eddy says on page 335 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Spirit never created matter. There is nothing in Spirit out of which matter could be made, for, as the Bible declares, without the Logos, the Æon or Word ofGod, 'was not anything made that was made.' " Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." Paul said, "The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

Christian Science teaches that because God is Spirit, man—God's creation—must be, and is now, spiritual. the false belief that man is material has to be laid aside, and man's true selfhood as God's child recognized. As the Bible says, we have to "put off the old man with his deeds," and to "put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him."
