Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on November 2, 1941.]

"Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way" (Prov. 13:6)—A more exact rendering of the Hebrew would be, "Righteousness guards right conduct" (literally, "uprightness of way"). Moffatt prefers to render: "Goodness safeguards men of integrity," and then continues, "but vice is the downfall of sinful men"

"Only by pride cometh contention" (Prov. 13:10)—An alternative translation of the original would be, "By pride comes only contention." Consequently, Kent translates: "By pride comes only strife."
