God Gives Us Bread

"Give us this day our daily bread,"
We pray to God on high,
And God, whose hand is bountiful,
Gives us a full supply.
But with the gift He gives a task:
Out where His fields are white,
He bids us go, when we have fed,
And work for Him aright.

God gives us bread, and swiftly days
Move onward in their flight,
And there is much that must be done
While yet the hours are bright;
So let us eat and rise to work—
Alert and strong each one—
Till as in heaven so on earth
God's gracious will is done;

Until triumphant Truth shall reign
Where error now holds sway;
Till those who worship self and sin
These idols cast away;
Till war's grim holocaust is quenched
And pride of power shall cease,
Lost in the healing grandeur of
Eternal love and peace.
