Some words representing certain qualities of life are often quite misunderstood. This is quite true of the word "meekness." To the popular mind it has forfeited its right to be thought a virtue, and the reason is that so many have linked meekness with weakness, and associated it with people possessing no courage, no resources, energy, or pluck. ...

Now this is not meekness at all, but rather a caricature of it. Jesus himself claimed the quality of life indicated by this word, when he said, "I am meek and lowly in heart," and he pronounced his blessing upon it, saying, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." ... He never condoned cowardice or a shallow sentimentalism born of fear. ...
