From Letters, Substantially as Published

My attention has been called to a recent editorial in the Advocate, entitled "Suffering: Polytheism and Pantheism." May I have space for a short reply?

Briefly, pantheism may be defined as the belief that, instead of the universe being created by God, created things themselves constitute God. Polytheism is, of course, a belief in more than one God. In line with the spiritual account of creation as given in the first and a part of the second chapter of Genesis, John writes, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." On page 502 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy conveys the same thought in these words: "The universe reflects God. There is but one creator and one creation." Here in two short sentences Mrs. Eddy clearly refutes both the theory of pantheism and the doctrine of polytheism. Numerous similar references are found throughout her writings. Her message, "Christian Science versus Pantheism," may be read or borrowed at most public libraries and at Christian Science Reading Rooms throughout the world. No one, after reading this short treatise, would ever again link together two such opposing systems.
