"Rivers in high places"

"When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places." This passage from the book of Isaiah becomes more beautiful and encouraging when studied in the light that Christian Science sheds on the Scriptures.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines "river" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 593) as "channel of thought," and adds, "When smooth and unobstructed, it typifies the course of Truth." Thus, when thought is opened to Truth, it is borne beyond the false evidence of the material senses to the real and eternal facts of existence. Thought must be conformed to divine Mind to catch the messages of Truth. We cannot hope to receive them while our consciousness is cluttered with beliefs that do not originate in God.

On the resurrection morning, "Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping." Here, in the dim morning light, was presented a picture of disappointment, despair, and desolation. But as she looked away from the empty tomb she caught a glimpse of the risen Christ, triumphant over "the last enemy," and heard from the lips of the Master himself that he was rising still higher in the understanding of life eternal. Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 31), "It is the living Christ, the practical Truth, which makes Jesus 'the resurrection and the life' to all who follow him in deed." We should not spend valuable time gazing into the empty tombs of matter. Learning such lessons as are helpful from past experiences, we should turn from them to the ever-present now of Spirit and its golden opportunities. Every experience, regardless of its nature, can be made a steppingstone to higher and better things through the application of Christian Science.
