The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (First Church).
Lecturer: John Henry Weer; introduced by Mrs. Josephine H. Derse, who said:—
Thousands of people all over the world gratefully acknowledge the healing of sickness through the ministry of Christian Science. About forty years ago I became a student of Christian Science, and since my first healing of severe stomach trouble I have depended on Christian Science to meet my needs. Broken bones and sprains have been quickly healed, business problems have been solved, and I have learned that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Perth, Australia (First Church).
Lecturer: Colin Rucker Eddison; introduced by Alan S. Perice, who said:—
In the seventeenth chapter of Luke, our Master has given us these words: "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: ... for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." If we know that the kingdom of God is within us, then we must know that God is ever present.
I have had many opportunities of proving the ever-presence of God. Physical difficulties have been overcome, and financial problems have been solved. I have made considerable progress in my business since I realized that in the Father's business there is no competition, only harmonious co-operation.
Adrian, Michigan (First Church).
Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Mrs. S. Annie Close, who said:—
The Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy opens with this statement: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Through the daily study of the Bible and Science and Health, Christian Scientists all over the world are learning how to lean on "the sustaining infinite," and thus are finding their days indeed "big with blessings."
We have experienced many healings through Christian Science in our family; and many of our friends have also been healed—in some cases, of so-called incurable diseases.
Cape May, New Jersey (Society).
Lecturer: Dr. John R. Carr; introduced by Joseph S. Clark, who said:—
On page 295 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is found the following: "God creates and governs the universe, including man. The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them."
Wherever we are, whatever we do, wherever we go, spiritual ideas are ever present. We need but be conscious of them and guided by them in order to have spiritual protection and a spiritual solution for every problem.
Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania (First Church).
Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Carl B. Hathaway, who said:—
It is my experience, and the experience of many in this audience, that righteous, humble prayer heals the sick, furnishes the needy with supplies, and obliterates the belief in death. A few years ago I attended a Christian Science lecture. I was experiencing severe pain, which continued almost until the end of the lecture. Suddenly I comprehended that true prayer is simply the realization that man, as the image and likeness of God, can express only harmony and peace. In a few minutes I was free, rejoicing in God's goodness and availability.
This experience indicated that any discordant condition with which we may be confronted can be instantaneously healed by Christ, Truth. May we, therefore, gratefully and freely partake of the spiritual feast which is offered to us.
Portsmouth, Virginia (First Church).
Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by Mrs. Vivian Bizzell Sanders, who said:—
Through the loving ministry of Christian Science, I and a multitude of others have found rest, peace, and health. The understanding of Science, even in a small measure, brings us "the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." By its healing and regenerating works it is evident that Christian Science is the truth which Christ Jesus taught.
