God Requires the Past

Our God requires the past of man
In His eternity:
No time for death or woe or sin
In His domain can be;

No time for pangs of memory.
No grief with secret voice
May cloud thy holy heritage
And freedom to rejoice.

Unchanging good the record keeps
Of life immaculate,
Unsullied by a mortal tale
Of wretchedness and hate.

No phantom of tomorrow's fear
May dim the sun of hope
That rises with its fadeless glow
For those who blindly grope.

No scar of bitter yesterday,
No penalizing dawn,
Can mar the blest creation that
Our Father looks upon.

Awake, my brother, dream no more!
In humble gladness bow;
Thanksgiving lift on wings of prayer
For Love's eternal now.
