Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons.]

"I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden" (Zeph. 3:18)—Some light is cast upon this rather puzzling verse when we find that the Hebrew term translated "solemn assembly" was often used in the sense of "a joyous festival"; and when thus understood this verse would appear to be carrying on the thought of "joy" expressed in the previous verse.

"I will save her that halteth" (Zeph. 3:19)—The verb "halt" does not mean "stand still," in this verse, but is used in the somewhat archaic sense of "limp" or "be lame," and when thus understood provides a literal translation of the original. Hence Smith has: "I will deliver the lame;" and Moffatt: "I will ... rescue the lame."
