True Freedom
When the student of Christian Science contemplates the news of today, with its accounts of the enforced subservience of whole peoples to despotic power, he gratefully realizes that all who understandingly look to God are enabled to prove their citizenship in the kingdom of heaven and their God-given dominion. Through Christian Science each one may demonstrate that freedom is his birthright, and that no outside or material force can deprive him of it.
In his ministry Christ Jesus made no effort to bring mere political freedom to his people, nor did he in any way indicate that it was necessary for them to seek it, in order to claim their God-given dominion. In fact, he pointed to spiritual reality when he showed them the way in which freedom lay, for he said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This statement shows that freedom is spiritual, and that each individual must seek and realize it for himself, for it can be claimed and maintained, no matter what the outward evidence may seem to be. This freedom is obtained through the understanding that man is created spiritually, in the image of God, and is at all times governed and protected by divine Love.
In the first chapter of Genesis is found the true record of creation, in which man is declared to be made in God's likeness and given dominion over all. The Bible contains accounts of those who proved their God-given dominion in the face of varied arguments to the contrary. This ascendancy over evil was gained through the recognition of God's power and of His care for His children. Jesus summed up the inseparable relationship of God and His idea, man, in a few words when he said, "No man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand." So it is in the world today. Material forces may seem to be dominant, and persecution and aggression to be in power; but in any place and at any time one may claim and prove that these lies of mortal mind cannot touch one's true selfhood, which is ever at one with God.
