About eighteen years ago the teachings of Christian Science...
About eighteen years ago the teachings of Christian Science were brought into our home. A relative told us that his wife and baby girl had been healed by Christian Science of chronic constipation. The news made us think, and we found ourselves looking forward to a Christian Science lecture which was to be delivered in our town. We were impressed by the lecture, and began to attend the church occasionally.
We seemed to be needing a great deal at that time, including better health and home life, and a better job. I had been held in bondage by neurasthenia for nearly ten years, and could not understand why my prayers were not answered. My wife asked me many times to have Christian Science treatment. This I flatly refused, saying that I did not see why my prayers should not be as good as any Christian Scientist's. I was a preacher in another denomination, and a conscientious worker in many religious activities. I thought I knew everything about the Bible and church matters. That grave error of self-righteousness has been corrected by Christian Science.
As my condition grew worse, and when everything seemed bad, my wife visited a Christian Science practitioner, in spite of my objections and in face of my prejudice. She was lovingly asked to hold steadfastly to the truth that God is the only governing power. I am told that she pondered this statement almost constantly during the next two days. A week later I was completely and permanently healed.
This newly found freedom meant everything to us, and we commenced to enjoy newness of life. When the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was given a place in our home, all material remedies, tonics, health foods, and so forth, were put out, and authorized Christian Science literature brightened and gladdened our thought. And when we tendered our last pound note to the church librarian for a copy of Science and Health, it was indeed a big and joyous step forward.
Since that time I have been privileged to become a member of a branch church and of The Mother Church, and have enjoyed many church activities, including a term of three years as Second Reader in a branch church.
One morning, at the place where I was employed, something occurred which proved to me the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, and made me feel sure of the truth of the teachings of Christian Science.
I had checked out all the vehicles except one, and the driver of this particular van found it difficult to start the engine. It was a one-ton van, fully laden with bread. I suggested the raising of a rear wheel to ease the car, and to make sure it was clear of the ground I passed my right hand between the wheel and the floor. At that moment the van slipped off the jack and, trapping my hand, pinned me to the floor. Fearful thoughts came first, among them the suggestion that I should not be able to use my right fingers any more, and that it would therefore be difficult to get a living; but like a flash something I had read in Science and Health (p. 427) quickly came to my aid: "Man is the same after as before a bone is broken or the body guillotined." This grand verity gave me confidence, and I called to be released. I refused to let anyone see my hand, and retired to wash it and be quiet. In less than an hour I was at my desk, writing, entirely free and rejoicing greatly.
Space will not permit me to relate the many other victories over error I have had. It is my sincere desire to be faithful in and loyal to the Cause of Christian Science, and so prove my gratitude for what it has done and is doing for me and mine.
