"No other gods before me"

Since men have believed that existence is finite and matter is real all forms of idolatry have followed. Christian Science teaches that true consciousness cognizes only spiritual existence. As we accept its teachings we find that mortal beliefs recede, and we gain a clearer apprehension of man's spiritual nature. As thought becomes spiritualized, the gods of mythology give place to more spiritual worship.

To those who are spiritually enlightened, the crudity of paganism becomes revolting. But without a clear understanding of the nature of the Supreme Being and man's relationship to Him, it is impossible accurately to discern between the real and the unreal, the true and the untrue. Until the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy, true Christianity was not understood to be an exact Science, and so religion was to some extent at the mercy of human conjecture; hence subject to inconsistency in its practical application.

The teachings of Christian Science make it clear that because God is Spirit, man is purely spiritual. There is a line of demarcation between matter and Spirit, on the one side of which are sin, sickness, and death; on the other, eternal Life, Truth, and Love. Jesus stated that "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." The First Commandment unreservedly demands subservience to God, Spirit.
