"Thy throne is established"

When he wrote, "The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty," and continued, "Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting," the Psalmist acknowledged the supremacy, power, and eternality of God. When he declared, "The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us," the prophet Isaiah not only emphasized God's supremacy as the only governing power, but he also revealed God as the source of divine law and of righteous judgment. Throughout the Scriptures, in both the Old and the New Testament, are passages acknowledging the supremacy of God and glorifying His majesty and omnipotence.

Christian Science teaches that God is infinite divine Mind, and shows this Mind to be the one creative and governing Principle. It acknowledges Mind, Spirit, God, as supreme, and enthrones Him as the ruler and preserver of the spiritual universe, including individual man. By revealing God as divine Mind, Christian Science turns the thought of its students away from the false theological belief that God is a magnified personal ruler, sitting upon a mythical throne in a far-off heaven. It explains that since God is Mind, the only place where He can be enthroned is in consciousness. And Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 266), "Perfect and infinite Mind enthroned is heaven."

Christian Science teaches that heaven is harmony, and that in the spiritual universe, the only real universe, where divine Principle is supreme, harmony is absolute and inviolable. Therefore, in the realm of Spirit, divine intelligence, there is no discord of any kind. And the only place where heaven, harmony, the rule of divine Love, exists is in spiritual consciousness, that which reflects or expresses the divine nature.

It is obvious that to enthrone Mind as consciousness is to dethrone matter. Thus the understanding of the true nature of God as omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient Mind, or Spirit, enables one intelligently to obey the First Commandment, which declares, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Intelligent obedience to the First Commandment ensures compliance with the second and following commandments. And it will be seen that Christian Science, in acknowledging God, divine Mind, as the one presence and the only governing power, justifies its claim to be founded upon the teachings of the Bible.

The acknowledgment of Mind as supreme — as the source of all real law, government, and power—precludes the possibility of believing in or obeying so-called material laws. It frees one from hampering beliefs which ignorance of divine facts engenders. Thus students of Christian Science are in the measure of their understanding being liberated from bondage to fear of so-called mortal laws, obedience to which often results in sin, sickness, poverty, and discord of every name and nature. Thousands of Christian Scientists in all parts of the world are proving in unnumbered instances that the enthronement of Mind as supreme and acknowledgment of its law as irresistible give them, in their present human experience, a sense of freedom which they have not before enjoyed, and for which they are deeply and sincerely thankful.

In an article called "Loyal Christian Scientists," which will be found in "Miscellaneous Writings," a book which alert students highly prize, Mrs. Eddy says (p. 277): "No evidence before the material senses can close my eyes to the scientific proof that God, good, is supreme. Though clouds are round about Him, the divine justice and judgment are enthroned." It is evident that if one has gained the consciousness that good is supreme, he cannot longer be deceived by the argument or suggestion that evil has power. No matter what the testimony of the senses may be, no matter how frightening the appearances, one with this understanding can deny and disprove the false claims of evil. And Christian Scientists are unspeakably grateful to their beloved Leader that she has, through her writings and through her example, made this fact abundantly plain.

The effort to enthrone Mind, Spirit, God, and to obey His law may sometimes seem in the experience of students to be fraught with difficulty. It may appear to one engaged in this endeavor that there are many obstacles to be surmounted. But, even so, he need not be discouraged, because persistent, faithful, intelligent effort will, sooner or later, be rewarded with success, and the success attained will be in proportion to one's understanding that in absolute truth, or divine Science, the supremacy, the omnipotence, the eternality of Mind and its harmonious government are already established. Knowing this to be a fact, Mrs. Eddy was able to write, on page 306 of Science and Health, "Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal."
