It was in 1910 that the light of Christian Science dawned...
It was in 1910 that the light of Christian Science dawned upon my consciousness. But ere it dawned I had long groped my way through the ritualism of a religious teaching which, though embracing a measure of aesthetic appeal, failed to meet "the heart's great needs."
My acquaintance with Christian Science began with the reading of a Sentinel. At that time I was laboring under a sense of discouragement and depression, attended with sleeplessness and pains in the head, which seemed almost overwhelming. Although employed, my outlook on life was indeed dark, for medicine, stimulants, and exercise had failed to help me, and there seemed no alternative but to resign my position and seek what I believed to be relief in a life of useless solitude. The condition continued for about fifteen months. During the latter part of that period I consulted a Christian Science practitioner and commenced treatment. One day, after a conversation with the practitioner, who had treated me for several months without substantial relief, I suddenly felt as if I were walking on air. It seemed as if a great weight had suddenly lifted from my shoulders. Pain, discouragement, and all sense of depression had fled. I was instantaneously healed. I did not, however, wish to tell the practitioner of the healing until I had waited to see whether it would last. This reluctance to acknowledge God's goodness was, I now realize, due to my lack of understanding. To my surprise, however, the practitioner told me not only that I had been healed, but when the healing had taken place. To me this seemed wonderful. From that glad day to the present not a vestige of that error has returned.
During the years which have intervened I have found in Christian Science unfailing remedy for such physical problems as have presented themselves. Among these have been grippe and a sprained arm. Business difficulties have been overcome in ways which to human sense seem miraculous, but which, according to Christian Science, are divinely natural.
