Christian Science was presented to me by a friend who told me that Christian Science believe that God heals the sick now the same as when Jesus was on earth. My reply to this was, "why not?" I was rather surprised that no one had thought of it before, for it seemed so logical. I had always loved the Bible, but had been taught that its promises referred to a future time.
I had been very delicate from birth, always in the hands of the doctors. The winters were a great trial, and I used to spend the greater part of them indoors with bronchitis, which the doctors declared to be chronic. the fear of consumption was held over me by my parents. I used to suffer with severe headaches and indigestion, so that mealtimes became a torture. In fact I used to wonder what there was to live for.
After three weeks of reading the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, I found my outlook on life changing. The book was answering many questions about God which had always puzzled me, and which the churches could not answer for me. I did not think of applying this truth to my physical condition, because I discovered that my greatest need lay in the desire to know more about God. During this period the taking of medicine went quite out of my thought until my friend, who was taking the same medicine, reminded me that she was ready for more. I told her that she could have mine. She was rather troubled, because she knew how much I had depended on medicine. She urged me to take it, but I told her that I could not. I said, "They that be whole need not a physician."
