The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Wildwood, New Jersey (First Church).
Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Mrs. Iva M. Carty, who said: —
In the Bible we read: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him. . . . And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."
Christ Jesus showed us how to prove that God is our Father and we are His children.
Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" what the realization of one infinite God, good, unifies do. She writes (p. 340), "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed."
SWARTHMORE, Pennsylvania (First Church).
Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Howard P. Blades, who said: —
On page 114 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy states: "Christian Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical. It lifts the veil of mystery from Soul and body. It shows the scientific relation of man to God, disentangles the interlaced ambiguities of being, and sets free the imprisoned thought. In divine Science, the universe, including man, is spiritual, harmonious, and eternal."
The teachings of Christian Science in regard to God and man are contrary to those commonly accepted. Humanity is largely ignorant of the mental slavery it endures. Christian Science assures us that as children of God we may assert our freedom from the penalties of the enslaving senses, and experience joy, harmony, health, and peace, thereby exercising the dominion which God has given to man.
There is an old but untrue saying that opportunity knocks but once. Opportunity is constantly presenting itself —the opportunity to solve the problems confronting us. Through the study and practice of Christian Science, men gain liberation from mental bondage, and their record of achievements causes others to marvel and glorify God, who has "given such power unto men."
Durban, Natal, South Africa (First Church).
Lecturer: Colin Rücker Eddison; introduced by Herbert Cecil Ballance, who said: —
Christian Science is indeed the Science of the teachings of Christ Jesus, and blesses all those who seriously take up its study. This study is not, however, for great scholars only. Little children can and do understand its teachings.
Christian Science reveals the basic realities of Life, and proves that God is Life, Truth, and Love, and that man is spiritual, the child of God, the inheritor of good. A realization of these facts enables us to overcome evil of every kind, instead of submitting to it.
Portage, Wisconsin (First Church).
Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by Mrs. Hazel McCallum, who said: —
Christ Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Christian Scientists all over the world are receiving rest, peace, and healing through the study and application of the truth.
Some years ago, physicians claimed that I would be unable to walk for several months, if at all. But when I turned unreservedly to Christian Science, the healing was completed in a short time.
New Haven, Connecticut (First Church).
Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Mrs. Ruth M. Luther, who said: —
Christian Science declares the allness of God and man's oneness with his heavenly Father. The understanding and application of these facts is daily bringing into the lives of thousands throughout the world more joy, better health, and a greater sense of harmony than they have ever known before. They are thereby experiencing the fulfillment of the words of the beloved Psalm, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
Winnetka, Illinois (First Church).
Lecturer: George Channing; introduced by Mrs. Marian T. Beman, who said: —
Mrs. Eddy says in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 54), "Millions are believing in God, or good, without bearing the fruits of goodness, not having reached its Science." We are apt to think that an understanding of Science is difficult to acquire, but Christian Science is simple. Its basic fact is: one infinite Mind is All.
Christian Science requires not mere belief in God, but the understanding of Him. This understanding enables us to bear "the fruits of goodness."
