I trust you will grant space in your next issue for these comments on a recent article in which the writer implies that the teachings of Mesmer "became a part of the 'philosophy' behind the doctrines of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy."

A study of the authorized literature of Christian Science is of the first importance and will correct any misunderstanding in regard to its teachings. There is no connection between suggestion, hypnotism, or mesmerism and the practice of Christian Science.

The Bible was Mrs. Eddy's authority; and she devotes a special chapter to the unmasking of animal magnetism in her principal work, entitled, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science. This book enables the student to discern the spiritual import of the Scriptures, to understand what the Apostle Paul meant when he said, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."

We have abundant evidence that the human mind and body combine as one; if the individual thinks sinful and diseased thoughts, takes into his consciousness erroneous beliefs, the result will, in the end, be disastrous.

Christian Science teaches that the only way out of fleshly thinking is through Christ, Truth. Mrs. Eddy maintains that "the perfect man—governed by God, his perfect Principle—is sinless and eternal" (Science and Health, p. 304).
