When I was about nine years old, a neighbor recommended that my mother send my sister and me to the Christian Science Sunday School. We were enrolled and attended the Sunday school regularly. I am unceasingly grateful for those years when the seeds of Truth were sown by consecrated teachers. I am grateful to the teacher who encouraged the young pupils to buy and use their own copies of the Bible, and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

Several years ago, while I was still a pupil in Sunday school, our family started on a long trip. After we had traveled several hundred miles, our car was driven off the highway to avoid hitting another automobile. I was sitting in the front seat, and I saw a telephone post for which we were headed. I immediately began repeating to myself, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," a part of "the scientific statement of being," which Mrs. Eddy has given us on page 468 of the textbook. When we hit the post there was a light thump as it landed on top of the car. The front of the car was uninjured. The weight of the post had caused the top of the car to bend slightly, forcing the center of the windshield into a pattern of cracks. This was before the days of steel-topped cars and shatter-proof glass. We were all unhurt.

I am grateful for protection while on a bicycle tour in Scandinavia. One day, while traveling rapidly down a strange mountain road, I became afraid and lost control of the bicycle on a sharp turn. The bicycle skidded into a ditch, and I slid down the mountain about ten feet. I was able to walk, but my friends who were not Christian Scientists predicted dire results. I made an effort "to pray aright," as Mrs. Eddy says on page 15 of Science and Health, closing the lips and silencing the material senses. Dirt and gravel were washed off at an inn at the foot of the mountain, and after dinner I picked up my bicycle to go on. Our Leader says (ibid., p. 392), "Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously," and, of course, I wanted to express only the harmony of the man of God's creating. I am grateful that the ten boys and girls with whom I was traveling expressed no more concern over the incident. For myself, the experience enriched my sense of values, making friends more valued, the beauty of the countries more poignant, and the time to study the weekly Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly more precious.
