Working Out Our Salvation
Christian Science teaches us that we can and must overcome mortality by spiritualization of thought, replacing material beliefs, notions, and opinions with the truth about God and His creation.
The real man is wholly spiritual and dwells in freedom and harmony. There never was a moment when this was not true. In reality God's creation has never been interrupted or opposed by false belief of an existence apart from Him. Spirit and its idea, man, including the universe, remain forever unchanged. Nothing can be added to reality, nor anything taken from it. God's creation is eternal in all its perfection and beauty; and there is no other creation. We can discern this spiritual fact only as we express humility, and are obedient.
Christian Science shows that we must work out our own salvation; that material existence, with its myriad beliefs of pleasure and pain in matter, is to be overcome, not submitted to. It shows that material existence, so called, is nothing; that this mental delusion is dispelled by an understanding of the ever-present facts of real being. Paul's admonition to the Philippians, "Work out your own salvation," is applicable to each one, and none may evade it.
