Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons.]

"Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge" (Ps. 19:2)—Moffatt suggests the rendering: "Day after day takes up the tale, night after night makes him known."

"In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also." (Ps. 95:4)—The word which is translated "strength" is in the plural, and has the literal meaning of "heights" or "peaks," which thus stand in natural contrast to the "deep places of the earth" mentioned in the preceding clause. Hence Moffatt renders: "The depths of earth lie in his hand, the mountain-peaks are his;" while the American Standard Version has: "The heights of the mountains are his also."
