Keeping the Sabbath

Students of the Bible are familiar with the command, "Ye shall keep the sabbath." We know that, in order to be obeyed, a command must first be understood. Is the "sabbath" truly understood in its spiritual significance, or are men believing that in attending church service on one day each week, and spending this day in a less businesslike fashion than usual, they have done their duty and may expect the reward to follow?

Showing men how to keep the Commandments rightly and avail themselves of the rewards—health, happiness, and peace—Christian Science comes to bewildered humanity as a bright star in a dark night. This Science is the revelation of Truth in this age. It illumines the truths revealed in the Holy Scriptures. It helps us to acquaint ourselves with Biblical teachings, and to keep the Commandments literally and in their spiritual significance.

Christian Science proves that mankind today, as of old, may solve their problems and experience harmony according to divine promise, proportionately as they understand and practice in daily life the Science that Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated. He kept the Sabbath, not by worshiping God on one day only, at a certain place or time, but by being daily, yes, even hourly, about his Father's business. Referring to the barrenness of material theories with their false evidences and conclusions, Jesus said, "Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?" Do not his words indicate that observing the letter alone is not sufficient? The spiritual meaning of the Commandments must be understood, if they are to be obeyed aright. Does this not call attention to the impossibility of keeping the Sabbath by ritual observance alone?
