True Substance

Today, when so many long-cherished theories are being exploded, and men and nations seem to be moving in an unstable world of conflicting beliefs, Christian Science comes with certainty and strength to comfort and support us. Through its revelation of spiritual reality it is making known the true substance of the universe as ever-present, omnipotent Mind; and it is thus giving us a sure spiritual foothold, amidst the welter of materiality, ignorance, and gloom.

In considering true substance one may derive much help from a study of Mrs. Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 124), "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind." These words convey a feeling of solidarity, substantiality, strength, support, unity. The perfect unity of all ideas is a necessary corollary to the oneness of the divine Mind, in which all true ideas originate and dwell. Ideas, in reflecting the divine Mind, express the adhesive, cohesive, and attractive "properties of Mind." Their expression must always be as perfect as their divine source. Consequently, God's ideas never interfere with one another, never displace, obstruct, hinder, dominate, invade, or encroach upon one another. Though expressing Mind's adhesive and cohesive properties, they are not dependent on one another for life, support, sustenance, for they are individually dependent on God alone, emanating from Him, like rays from the sun, combining and harmonizing in complete unity and perfection. Each is a specific expression of Mind, and cannot possibly be misplaced or tampered with in any way. Being the outcome of God, all are provided with everything they need. Their divine qualities of intelligence, strength, action, stability can never be undermined, impoverished, or exhausted.

These facts, understood, reveal the illusory nature of such material beliefs as greed, envy, personal domination, interference, obstruction, misplacement, fatigue, weakness, apathy. Such beliefs have no cohesion or attraction, because these "properties of Mind" are wholly spiritual. Nor can such material beliefs adhere to the real man, who is himself God's complete spiritual idea. Through the realization of this fact the claim of error to possess adhesion, cohesion, and attraction, is compelled to give place to the true idea of Mind and its laws. Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are ever present, supporting and maintaining Mind's ideas in their perfect relationship to divine Principle and to each other. All ideas are thus knit together in one harmonious whole.
