Langenthaler Tagblatt
An article in a recent issue states that much of Christian Science is unsound and not clear, and that the greatest power in this world, the power of sin, is not taken seriously. The writer says that this is just what suits the modern man, because he does not have to confess that he is insufficient before God.
This description of the teachings of Christian Science contradicts the facts, and needs, therefore, a correcting explanation. Christian Science teaches that divine Mind, Love, Truth, named God, is the only power, and that therefore sin is not power, but only an erroneous belief. Mortals, on the contrary, are sinners, and sin is self-punished. Forgiveness of sin is the overcoming of sin. This overcoming is not done by human will, nor by the mere statement that there is no sin because in the presence of God it does not exist; it is brought about by the Christ alone, the Christ-spirit. When this spirit takes possession of human consciousness, sin disappears from this consciousness. So, Christian Science, in one way, takes sin more seriously than other denominations, although it affirms that, since divine Mind is All, sin is merely a powerless imposition. Christ Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." And it does make men free today as in the time of Jesus.
