I am indeed grateful for the protection, blessings, and many healings which have come to me through my study of Christian Science. My daily prayer is that all will receive the glorious truth which our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, so unselfishly has given to the world. Christian Science proves Jesus' comforting words, "Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you."
In the fall of 1918 I had a very severe attack of influenza, and was put to bed by order of the family physician. A few days later uremic poisoning developed. Fear started to handle the whole family. Besides the medicine prescribed by the physician, many home remedies were given, without any healing result. After about two weeks, in spite of the best medical care, the aid of a nurse, and that of my own dear parents and family, double pneumonia set in. The doctor told the family that he could make only one suggestion. This was to consult the finest advice in the medical and surgical professions. They decided to take me to the hospital, and perform a Caesarian operation in order to try to save my life. I was in a very weak physical condition, and no hope was given of saving the child or myself.
At this point my father, the only one in the family who knew of Christian Science, came and asked my husband and me if we would give it a trial. The answer was that we would. The nurse and the doctors were released, all material help was given up, and a Christian Science practitioner and nurse were called. This all took place about noon. An aunt who visited the home just at this time was told that the doctors could do no more for me, and that I was passing on. Work by the faithful and courageous practitioner was begun immediately. That afternoon there was a change. Normal functions were resumed, a very high fever began to disappear, and I regained consciousness. The same evening the nurse read to me from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I experienced a most beautiful spiritual illumination, which has meant much to me in these past years. As I lay looking across the room it was as if a veil were removed from my eyes. On page 513 of our textbook we read, "But anon the veil is lifted, and the scene shifts into light." In a few days I was eating my meals at the table, and in a short time was doing my housework and preparing for the arrival of my baby. Three months later a fine, healthy boy was born. The attending physician thought a miracle had occurred.
