In a recent letter I endeavored to make it clear that Christian Scientists, relying on the ministrations of Christian Science for healing, are not allowed to "suffer," as the writer of the article on "Spiritual Healing" suggests. Christian Science heals understandingly those who turn to it for relief.
Christian Science is a religion of love. That it is efficacious is proved by its rapid growth since the time of its discovery by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866. Christian Science does not claim to be a new religion, but it teaches the same healing method employed by Christ Jesus and his disciples centuries ago. For many years Mary Baker Eddy sought to discover the Principle which lay behind the healing works wrought by Christ Jesus. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she writes (p. 109), "I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration." She also says in the same book (p. 110): "In following these leadings of scientific revelation, the Bible was my only textbook. The Scriptures were illumined; reason and revelation were reconciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian Science was demonstrated." Many are healed of disease—difficulties of all kinds—through reading the textbook of Christian Science, in conjunction with the Bible.
Christian Scientists cannot accept as members of their church those who are still members of another denomination. This does not imply any disrespect for other churches. On the contrary, Christian Scientists value the good work done by all Christian denominations and by all individuals who are preaching the gospel according to Christ Jesus' commands.
