During the trying times of the World War the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was sent to me by a sister. Its comforting message found me, a young teacher in a one-room prairie schoolhouse, facing many problems, one of which was the separation from a loved one who had enlisted in the United States Army and had been sent to France. Many times I remained at the little schoolhouse until dusk, poring over the textbook's precious pages.

Later, while serving as war worker in the nation's capital, I had many opportunities to use my small understanding, gained thus far only through study of the textbook. The ninety-first Psalm, printed on a small card, was an answer to my prayer for assurance of the loved one's safety "over there." During the world-wide epidemic of influenza I was beautifully protected, and though my roommate forced me to go to bed and summoned a doctor, I was able to cling to what I knew of God and man and to refuse the medicine offered. Much to the surprise of those around me, who saw only a very sick girl, I was able to report back at work within the week.

After the Armistice the way opened up for me to receive an early dismissal with traveling expenses to the Far West, where a teacher's position in a half-term school for underprivileged Russian children met my immediate need. Here came many opportunities to apply Christian Science in a practical way, love for man turning work into joyous service.
