Spiritual Facts

THE mortal supposition is that intelligence is confined within matter, is dependent upon matter for expression or manifestation, and is unable to function without it. According to this false belief, there are varying degrees of intelligence. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 23) : "Is pantheism true? Does mind 'sleep in the mineral, or dream in the animal, and wake in man'?" She also asks (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 478), "What evidence of Soul or of immortality have you within mortality?" and continues, "What would be thought of the declaration that a house was inhabited, and by a certain class of persons, when no such persons were ever seen to go into the house or to come out of it, nor were they even visible through the windows?"

Since God, Mind, is the only creator, it is clear that if matter exists, Mind created it—a self-evident impossibility, since there is nothing in Mind out of which to create matter. This brings us to the conclusion that what appears to be matter is unreal. That which seems to be objective is an erroneous human concept.

Students of Christian Science find that in the degree that they apprehend reality, their human conditions correspondingly improve. When we shall have learned to think in complete accordance with spiritual truth, we shall see all things as they actually are.
