In early childhood I learned to read the Bible at my mother's knee, while she was busily knitting. I attended Sunday school, and at the age of sixteen became a member of a Protestant church. At twenty-one I had read the writings of Paine, Ingersoll, Spencer, Darwin, and other modern writers, and had become an agnostic; but I was not long content, and began again to seek for Truth.
I read excerpts from the writings of Confucius, Epictetus, Plato, Socrates, and many other ancient philosophers, but as yet had no fixed philosophy, rule of life, or knowledge of true being. I had yet to learn that mortal mind does not cognize the facts of Spirit, and that the real consciousness of the love of God outweighs all other so-called consciousness.
In 1905, Christian Science first came to my attention, and again in 1920, 1924, and 1930; and each time it was dismissed without investigation as just another ism. I did not then recognize the "pearl of great price." It was in 1932, at the depth of the depression and the height of the financial crisis, that my attention was again called to Christian Science by two of my friends, who unerringly recognized my need. During a friendly call, they remarked that there was no need for my suffering. I became receptive and inquired if Science was difficult to apprehend; at once I was informed that it was simple, and readily understood by children. They gave me some Christian Science literature, and at the office next day, after I had read a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel for only a few minutes, a glimpse of truth, revealing the "gentle presence, peace and joy and power" (Poems, by Mrs. Eddy, p. 4), came to me with a radiance of love and a sense of well-being, such as only the Christian Scientist who has truly touched the garment's hem, knows.
