in the Call

An article appearing in a recent issue of the Call has been brought to my attention because of its irrelevant reference to Christian Science, and I should like to correct the impression one paragraph in it gives.

A Christian Science treatment is very far from "merely wish-thinking" or even blind "faith" alone, for faith must be based on a clear spiritual understanding of the power of God. A verse in the Bible points this out in these words: "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?" Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says on page 297 of that book, "Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding, human thought has little relation to the actual or divine." To heal himself by Christian Science methods the young man mentioned in the article would need to follow the rule of healing used by Jesus, which is explained by Mrs. Eddy in these words (ibid., pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick."
