With great gratitude I give my testimony.

Eighteen years ago I heard for the first time about Christian Science as a religion including an exact healing doctrine. At that time I was suffering very much from sleeplessness. I used to take narcotic drinks and was addicted to liquor. I had some treatment from a mesmerist, but got no help. Financial problems were rather difficult at that time, and I had to work hard to give my family what they needed. I had been brought up in luxury, so all these problems seemed very hard to solve. The worst thing was that I became very nervous over spiritism, about which the people surrounding me used to talk. I felt such an unconquerable fear of death and of what they call "bad ghosts" that I looked for something better, because my guilty conscience told me that I was sinning.

Though I had not been baptized or admitted to any church, I used to pray in the orthodox manner. I had faith, but my faith was mixed with incredulity. So when for the first time I got a Bible to read, I devoured the New Testament at every free moment. A little later I got a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from an aunt. I thought I knew sufficient English to read the textbook, but alas, every time I attempted it I had to put this valuable book aside. Notwithstanding this, I studied my Dutch Bible, which became a great treasure to me. After a time I found that I was healed of sleeplessness and of addiction to liquor, and that I did my work with more courage and joyfulness.
