The Cardinal Point

The Gospel according to St. John records Jesus' valiant healing of the impotent man, the scientific rule underlying which Christian Science reveals.

The narrative reads: "Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. ... And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years."

The sheep market was near one of the gates of Jerusalem. Therefore, many pilgrims and travelers must have passed the "multitude" of impotent folk lying in the five porches. Some of them may have noticed this man, whose suffering probably was recorded in his face, and stopped to give him words of comfort, while others may have hurried on, not desiring to be troubled with this wretched picture.
