Perpetual Harmony

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the divinely inspired Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, gives us this helpful instruction on page 381 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony,—God's law." One definition of "harmony" is "concord, peace, friendship." God is omnipotent, all-power; so there is no other power that can change His laws, or interfere with their universal, unceasing operation. Therefore, all that really exists, expresses unceasing harmony, concord, peace.

Since God is the only Mind, He is the only Lawmaker; and He being infinite Spirit, His laws are spiritual. This eliminates every so-called material law, as utterly devoid of reality. So, as we learn in Christian Science, the supposed material laws of sin, disease, sorrow, pain, suffering, accident, death, are not laws, for there is no peace, concord, or harmony in any of them. They are just false beliefs, utterly unreal and powerless. Unfortunately, many seem unwilling to accept the teachings of Christian Science and hold to the false belief that material laws govern man and the universe. But, our acceptance of the great truth of being, that everything in God's creation is governed by "the rule of perpetual harmony,—God's law," is our protection against the false belief that there is an evil power to injure, hurt, harm, make sick, or destroy. Science and Health declares (ibid., p. 228): "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God." It thus becomes self-evident that to acknowledge power in material laws, in matter—in aught apart from God—is to dishonor God.

Regardless of the glorious truth that has been revealed in Christian Science, we may hear the argument, "If we are all governed by God's law of perpetual harmony, how do you account for the great unrest, fear, and turmoil which are prevalent in the world today?" Christian Science fully answers the question. Seeming unrest, fear, and disturbance are manifestations of mortal mind, evidences of so-called material sense; but matter and material sense are unreal, and what is unreal cannot testify truly. Proportionately as men understand and utilize the teaching of Christian Science, the seeming unrest and inharmonious conditions disappear, for evil has no foundation. We must hold to the revealed truth that all that is real is good, and refuse to allow anything to enter our consciousness that savors of evil. To the extent that we are faithful in this work, we are dwelling in heaven, proving in thought, word, and deed that, as our beloved Leader tells us in the textbook (ibid., p. 293), "Christian Science brings to light Truth and its supremacy, universal harmony, the entireness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil."
