A short time prior to my initial healing in Christian Science...
A short time prior to my initial healing in Christian Science, my wife, in the presence of a neighbor, threatened to use a secret so-called remedial agent to rid me of my bondage to the liquor habit, which had been my master for some ten years. Orally I challenged her threat, but secretly I became conscious of a sincere desire to be free, and wished that she might use the remedy successfully, although I had no faith in it.
During a drunken spree in November, 1913, I found myself in this city, having arrived in an unconscious condition from my home some thirty-five miles distant. One of my sisters induced me to accompany her to a Christian Science Sunday morning service, and I was much impressed by the quietness that prevailed.
One of the church members told my sister that he would aid me to secure local employment and, accordingly, I called at his office the following day. I was overjoyed, however, when his attempt was unsuccessful, for I overheard his telephone conversation which included, "He is a clean-cut, sober-looking fellow." I felt very sad at the word "sober," for I felt I should be obliged not to betray his confidence in me; and I almost ran down the corridor when I found myself again out of his office, free to continue the old indulgence. My slavery, which paraded as freedom, was not to be long-lived, however. On the evening of the following day, my sister and two friends accompanied me to the railway station. My sister pressed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy under my arm, requesting me to read the book. Reluctantly I agreed to do so, and when one of her friends asked, "But will he read it?" my sister flashed back the reply, "If he says he will read it, he will read it." Here again, I found my honor at stake, and immediately decided to hold to the standard set for me by my loyal defender.
