An Understanding Heart

Give me, dear Lord, a heart so tried
By flames of purifying fire,
That sin and self may be consumed,
And in their stead a pure desire
To learn to love Thy chastening rod
That brings me ever nearer Thee;
To grow more Christlike day by day,
Thy tender love and goodness see.

Teach me, dear Lord, to speak Thy word
Of truth to sin of every kind,
And prove the presence of Thy love,
Thy healing power, immortal Mind!
Oh, may I serve, and give, and watch,
And, constant, strive to do my part;
Give me to use that gift so rare,
Dear Lord, an understanding heart.
