Truth is indeed irresistible! In all humility I should like to tell of an experience which proved this not many years ago. I was suffering from heart and nerve trouble, and had procured a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, but owing to my having promised a friend that I would discontinue reading it, the book was laid aside. Later, in connection with the church of which I was then a member, an appointment was made with the principal of a Methodist Training School, with a view to my entering there in the autumn of the following year. During the interview, I was asked whether I was quite decided about my religion. My reply was in the affirmative. To my astonishment, on leaving this residence, the thought came to me, You will turn to Christian Science. The more I refused to listen, the more the thought persisted.
During this time I was still under the care of a doctor, but instead of regaining my health in order to take up the work which I thought at that time was mine to do, I gradually grew worse and became practically a mental and physical wreck. A day came when I resolved to finish with materia medica, and in place of it to lean absolutely on God. The orthodox doctrines which I knew ceased to satisfy me, and a search was begun for a religion which could heal me not only of my sick condition, but of many sinful ways from which I had been struggling for years to be free. I felt a strong desire to turn to Science and Health, if only to read one sentence. From that moment all resistance to Christian Science left me. Error, not the truth, was laid aside that day, and our much-treasured textbook has since been my constant companion. Help from a Christian Science practitioner was sought, and I shall never cease to be grateful for all her loving and consecrated work, which has many times enabled me to rise above the testimony of the material senses.
From the first treatment, a great change took place. I was able to go about alone, attended regularly both the Sunday and Wednesday services, and commenced each day with the study of our Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. Within a few months, temporary positions were undertaken, and finally a permanent one, wherein I have remained for the past eight years without a day's absence, except for the holiday periods. Although there have been testing times, the continuance of employment has been maintained entirely through the ministrations of Christian Science.
